RABBIT- ZOOLOGIST
Tonight the air is green with clover, with hay
and little tufts of grass carried by the breeze,
of unstable earth, of dusty mysteries
of rabbits digging tunnels in the dark. They stray
through the meadow, sniffing the wind, a bouquet
of violets. They leap in twos or threes,
their shadows with cottony tails. Or they freeze
when something feathered screams in the distance.
They stand up like tufted stones. But now, the night
grows soft again and sweet with jasmine. A scent
of petals presses against their fur. There are fruits
to eat. There is the thrilling pleasure
of digging the earth, sediment
of dreams scented with carrots and roots.
