NARCOTICO - MEO FUSCIUNI

Cycle of Mysticism

After many years, I returned to those streets, but I recognized none of those faces; new looks and unfamiliar hands reached for mine. Fragments of existence, ongoing questions about the true meaning of the sacred, the perfume becomes a scent, hidden in the old sacristies, among the worn pews of Palermo's monumental and popular churches, in grandmothers' old cupboards; each alley holds its own personal scent: an old fabric shop, the baker's oven, the barbershop with its vintage colognes and the warm fragrance of pastries. On Sundays, I remember, after Mass my father would hold my hand, we would pass the pastry shop on the street, my father would buy a tray of cannoli — it was a ritual, a beautiful olfactory memory: the ricotta, the candied fruit, the walk home. I had been away from Sicily for many years and the innocent face gave way to the image of a face covered by a thick beard; my hands no longer gesture, my mind questions and my curious nose explores the space. Narcotico is a perfume inspired by my Sicily, by the relationship with my most distant and visceral memories, the void, the depth of being. A search that continues every day, never stopping, almost a challenge to see how far the scent of a place can lead us. It is a journey to understand who you are, what your true roots are, and the scent of olfactory memories is the means by which to climb and let go.

Like any indelible sign, I remember each stage clearly. The journey began in the city of Palermo, on the steps of a church, last September. I knew I was looking for something to begin writing and feeling. The relentless smell of that threshold I never crossed still lingers in my olfactory memory.
